Smoke Up, Cook Out: Watermelon Bong

It's summertime - you're away at a cookout and realize that you don't have your trusty bong in sight. Luckily, you and your buddies hit the grocery store and picked up a watermelon for a tasty snack to complement your summertime bbq. Well, you can stop feeling meloncholy (pun intended) and take this missed opportunity to turn it into a refreshing smoking experience that is perfect for the summer.

Here are some tools you'll need:

  • Knife
  • Spoon/Ice Cream Scoop
  • Ziplock bag or container for the watermelon
  • Downstem & Bowl (If you don't have that you might have to get creative)

How To Make A Watermelon Bong

Step 1: Acquire the watermelon

If you don't have a watermelon around and are on a grocery trip, our recommendation is a smaller, seedless watermelon. The seeds can be a bit of a hassle but if they're not in sight, don't worry, you can still proceed. Mini-watermelons (the most common are Dulciena mini-watermelons) are the best size for this venture but if you want a bigger watermelon, that is absolutely up to your preference.

Step 2: Get your knife & prep the watermelon

If you've created a jack-o-lantern or scooped out a pumpkin before you'll be familiar with this step. Cut off the top of the watermelon just like you would a jack-o-lantern. Basically, you will want to make sure you cut the watermelon at a 45-degree angle. Push your knife, about an inch or so, through until you've penetrated through the flesh of the melon. Set the lid aside and do not throw it out!

Step 3: Hollow out the melon

Using a spoon or an ice cream scooper, scoop out all of the flesh. You can set aside for a tasty snack later or you can snack on it while you’re finishing up your bong. You can have your watermelon and smoke it, too! If you do not plan on sealing the top of the watermelon, leave the flesh on the top to help seal the air in while closed.

Step 4: Make a mouthpiece

Create a small circular hole near the lid you created earlier. You can place the lid back on the watermelon and lift it up when you're hitting.

Step 5: Prepare the downstem

Make sure it is small enough to avoid air escaping when it's time to smoke. The hole should be at somewhat of an angle so that the stem reaches the water but not angled so much that your herb will fall out.

Step 6: Fill up with water

Fill up the bong with just enough water to cover the stem. If it is hot outside or you just want a super crispy, summer fresh taste, you can add some ice inside the watermelon to keep a crispy cool hit.

Step 7: Enjoy!

After you name your watermelon (Bump n Rind?) and you want to explore more options now that you've made a watermelon bong, you can modify the instructions a bit to work with some of your favorite fruit. You can also make a pineapple bong, but make sure the foliage on top is out of the way of your mouthpiece. If you like it with the leaves on top - go ahead - just be careful smoking.

That's it - now get your melon on and have a happy summer!
